Keto. Paleo. Caveman. We hear about the trendy high protein human diets, but what exactly does protein do and why is it significant to our pet’s health and longevity?

Made up of building blocks called amino acids, protein is found in your skin, muscles, bones, and pretty much everywhere in your body. Protein has a key role in several bodily functions, from building and repairing muscles and tissues to supporting skin and coat health. This macronutrient is also at work where you can’t see it, combating diseases and creating natural chemicals and hormones your body needs for regulation. Protein is particularly important in growth, reproduction, and lactation stages of life. Without enough protein, your pup will never be able to jump the fence after the mail man, and your kitten won’t be able to stay awake to run through your halls at 3 in the morning. In addition, cats are obligate carnivores and have an additional essential amino acid, taurine, which is found in especially high quantities in red meat and poultry.

Higher protein diets are a perfect option for those over achievers out there, the fence jumpers and the late night mouse hunters. These high protein diets, such as our Barking at the Moon  recipes for dogs and  Indigo Moon  recipes for cats deliver high quality, lean protein to increase stamina, bodily functions, and replenish that never-ending energy tank your Jack Russel wants to remind you of the second you pour that much needed glass of antioxidants.

But like many things in life, balance is important. That’s why Sold Gold high protein items are crafted with not only clean, high-quality protein sources but also combined with healthy fats to supply essential energy and a carefully curated blend of functional superfoods , such as pumpkin, carrots, blueberries and cranberries, to feed microflora.  These ingredients, along with our protected probiotics, cleanse, balance and fuel for gut health and overall immune support.

However, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing in certain situations and there are some pets that should avoid a high protein diet. For example, while larger breed puppies may seem like perfect candidates for the extra punch of protein, they would benefit more from a receipt specifically crafted for proper development including controlled levels of calcium promote healthy growth and bone development. That’s why we created Wolf Cub to fulfill this need!

As beneficial as protein is to your pet, there are some health conditions, such as urinary tract issues, that require diets with lower levels of meat protein and certain minerals like calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Urinary tract issues can be especially concerning for male cats, which is why we recommend plenty of water and/or wet food and a diet with moderate protein such as Winged Tiger .

With that said, high protein / low carbohydrate diets can be beneficial to cats and dogs with diabetic concerns. We recommend speaking with your Veterinarian before making a diet change if your cat or dog has any health conditions requiring a special diet.

As always, if you have any questions about how much protein you should be feeding your furry friend, we are here to help sort through options with you.
