For years, experts have been debating which dog breeds are the smartest—but after years of collecting lengthy surveys from 199 dog-obedience judges, one psychologist may finally have the best idea yet.
Attempting to rate dog intelligence isn’t easy. In fact, it’s extremely difficult. There are many categories in which dogs are currently rated. Working intelligence (following orders), instinctive intelligence, spatial intelligence, kinesthetic intelligence, and interpersonal intelligence are just some of the things we use to determine a dog’s overall intelligence.
In his book, “The Intelligence of Dogs,” Coren found consistent results in his findings although he found there were exceptions in every breed that ultimately comes down to training.
The smartest dog breeds were broken down into tiers. The top tier includes the smartest working dogs that can learn a new command in less than five seconds and obey at least 95% of the time.
